If you started Grade 9 in 2024 or later, you must meet the requirements below to earn the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).

Compulsory Credits

You must earn the following 17 compulsory credits:

• 4 credits in French – FRL1W, FRA2D, FRA3U, FRA4U (1 credit per year of study)
• 3 credits in mathematics – MTH1W, MPM2D (Grade 10, with a passing requirement of 70 % in financial literacy, and 1 credit in Grade 11 MCR3U or Grade 12 MHF4U)
• 2 credits in science – SNC1W, SNC2D
• 1 credit in technological education – Grade 9 TAS1O or Grade 10 TAS2O
• 1 credit in English – EAE1W
• 1 credit in Canadian history – CHC2D (Grade 10)
• 1 credit in Canadian geography – CGC1W (Grade 9)
• 1 credit in the arts – AMU1O or ADA1O
• 1 credit in health and physical education – PPL1O
• ½ credit in career exploration – GLC2O
• ½ credit in civics and citizenship – CHV2O
• 1 credit from the STEM group

Compulsory STEM Course Group

You must earn 1 credit from the group below:

• business studies
• computer studies
• cooperative education
• mathematics (in addition to the 3 courses currently required)
• science (in addition to the 2 courses currently required)
• technological education (in addition to the course currently required)

When selecting your compulsory credits, keep the following in mind:

• You may use the Grade 9 course titled "Expression of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Cultures" as your compulsory arts credit.
• You may use the Grade 11 course titled "French: Discovering Contemporary First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Voices" as your compulsory French credit.
• You may use an Indigenous language course (Level 1 or Level 2) as your compulsory English credit if you took an Indigenous language course instead of an English course at the elementary level.
• Language learners: French-language learners enrolled in the Actualisation linguistique en français (ALF) or Programme d'appui aux nouveaux arrivants (PANA) may count up to 3 ALF/PANA credits toward the 4 compulsory French credits, regardless of the year they entered Grade 9. The fourth credit must come from a Grade 12 French course.

Optional Credits

In addition to compulsory credits, you must earn 13 optional credits by successfully completing courses chosen from this course calendar. Of these, a maximum of 4 credits may come from approved dual credit courses.

Meeting the Literacy Proficiency Requirement

For most students, this means passing the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT), which determines whether the student meets the minimum literacy standard across all subjects by the end of Grade 9.

Meeting the Financial Literacy Graduation Requirement

This means earning at least 70 % in the financial literacy modules of the Grade 10 Career Exploration course GLC2O. This mark will count for 5 % of the final grade of that course. Two attempts are permitted.

Earning at Least 2 Credits Through Online Learning

This means earning a minimum of 2 credits through online courses, which the School offers. However, students may be exempt if they are 18 years of age or older, or 16 years of age if they are no longer subject to parental authority.

Completing 40 Hours of Community Involvement

This means accumulating at least 40 hours of community service and/or volunteer work as part of the OSSD. It is possible to begin accumulating the required hours during the summer before starting Grade 9, in accordance with Policy/Program Memorandum 124 and in connection with the School's community service form.
